How Many People Lose Their Hair?

Many people lose their locks, psychological effects are a serious concern. If you look around it's easy to think that everyone else has hair, and you aren't. Some people find it degrades their confidence in their own identity and the way they feel.

While this may appear to be entirely natural, the fact lies that millions males as well as women are suffering from loss of hair.

Hair Loss Statistics

According to a 2014 survey by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, approximately 35 million men in the United States suffer some type of hair loss, and while approximately 21 million women are affected by hair loss.

With a total of 320 million living in the U.S., and at least 20% less than the age of 30 , in the year 2014 this means that more than 1 five Americans lose hair. This is with the male population making up a larger proportion of those who suffer from hair loss.

The probability that men experience hair loss is significantly higher as they age. At at the age 35 about 40% of men suffer from visible loss of hair, when they reach 60, the percentage increases to 65. This means that more than 50% of men, when they reach their late 40s or early 50s are experiencing noticeable hair loss.

Surprisingly, the figures for females are much more high. Another study suggests that at the age of 40, around 29% of women with hair loss suffer from depression. Around 60, 80 % of women experience at least some visible hair loss in accordance with the study of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.

Hair Loss Treatments: What's Available to Me?

For those seeking treatment to treat hair loss and loss of hair, the topical Minoxidil, also known as Rogaine is the most sought-after with 85 percent of people using this treatment. The remaining 15 percent use Propecia or finasteride. Of these numbers there was a tiny percentage who attempted other treatments, like a low-level vitamin therapy, laser therapy or herbal remedies.

The hair restoration procedure is the best and most secure method of treating hair loss and is the most likely method to provide the best results. Six years ago, in the year 2010 there were 101,252 restoration procedures performed across the United States (globally, the total of surgeries was 27,381). The majority of these were done on males who were between the ages of 30 and 49 (though there were some done on men who were younger or older as well).

The majority of patients had transplants ranging from 1,000 to 1,999, or 2,000 - 2,999 follicle grafts. This is a typical interval. The median number of follicles that can be found on one scalp of 110,000.

Nearly 60% of patients were pleased with their results following only one surgery with a similar percentage, and an additional 37 percent were satisfied following a second procedure. So 9/10 required at least two surgeries for optimal outcomes.
