Game-based learning is the learning process through a video game. Learning through video games is not entirely new, but it has been growing in popularity as well as sophistication since about the mid-1990s. This is because video games give players the opportunity to get out from the stressful pressure of real life situations and just focus on having fun. Learning through a game offers an effective way to help improve one's general knowledge.

There are many types of games that have learning potential. Educational games are usually games specifically designed for educational purposes, or that have secondary or tertiary educational value as well. These types of learning games include card, board, word and multi-player games like Sudoku and crosswords. The most popular type of educational game is the crossword puzzle. In this game the player is given several clues, each clue leading to another piece of information and the end result of completing the crossword puzzle. The player then gets rewarded for answering the correct answer and is allowed to share his or her work with others who may also be playing the game at the same time. Many adults play this type of game every day, especially when they need some brain exercise to get rid of their daily stresses or if they need a break from the hectic pace of their lives.

Video games are also good for enhancing memory. When you play a game, you are often required to perform repetitive tasks, such as memorizing information or solving problems. In most cases this task requires thinking in terms of memory and cognitive skills such as problem solving. Playing these types of games allows you to train your brain to recognize patterns and remember what you see and hear. By working at memory skills through games, you will be able to solve more complex problems and increase your cognitive abilities.
