Organizations in today’s cut-throat competition are constantly striving to improve their efficiency. They look to eliminate waste and make the most of their resources to achieve efficiency. The Six Sigma Methodology is a framework dedicated to just that. It is a methodology that works to eliminate defects in a product, process as well as a service through a disciplined, statistics-driven approach.

Brought to life in the early 1980s and based on the quality management fundamentals, Six Sigma methodology has evolved and is rather distinguished into Lean Six Sigma now. Whereas in Six Sigma, the focus was on manufacturing, Lean Six Sigma focuses on all facets of a business, thus making it a more wholesome approach. Over the years, it has emerged as a data-driven methodology that provides tools and techniques to define and evaluate each step of a process.

Lean Six Sigma has borrowed the belt structure from martial arts to recognize proficiency in the skill of a professional. The first step is a White Belt, where certification is not needed and is held by someone with the basic knowledge of Six Sigma. The second on the ladder is the Yellow Belt, certified and held by individuals possessing an intermediate knowledge of the methodology. Then comes the Green Belt, Black Belt, Master Black Belt, and the Champion. The Champion represents the highest proficiency in the Lean Six Sigma.

Green Belt Career Path

A Green Belt certified professional is one with the working experience of at least 3 years and possessing deep, insightful knowledge of the Six Sigma tools and processes. Sitting at number 3 on the ladder of the Six Sigma hierarchy, Green Belt professionals are well versed in the advanced elements of Lean Six Sigma Methodology.

Green Belts, as they are often called, take up the role of the employees of an organization who head the improvement teams and are experts on Six Sigma improvement methodology. Most of their time is spent on the decision‐making and strategy‐building components in accordance with the key elements in the Six Sigma project planning process.
